Interventional Glaucoma
What is Interventional Glaucoma?
Interventional glaucoma shifts treatment from a medication-first approach to procedure-based solutions that offer long-term relief. By incorporating laser glaucoma therapy, medication implants, and micro-incisional glaucoma surgery (MIGS), we can lower intraocular pressure (IOP) and slow disease progression without relying solely on daily eye drops.
This approach is ideal for early to moderate glaucoma and helps patients maintain stable vision, especially field of vision, while reducing the burden of lifelong medication use.
Eye drops can be challenging to use consistently. Topical side effects, difficulty with compliance, physical restrictions such as tremor and arthritis all prevent patients from using their daily drops. Sometimes, despite consistent use, drops may not provide adequate pressure control for certain patients. Additionally, as glaucoma progresses, more aggressive treatment is often needed to prevent further vision loss. Proactive interventions with drop-less advanced technologies are increasingly important.
Our interventional glaucoma specialists have advanced training in the latest surgical techniques and technologies. Rather than simply managing glaucoma, interventional approaches can provide more definitive pressure control proactively, reducing dependence on daily medications and slowing disease progression.
The goal of interventional glaucoma is to preserve vision through more proactive, effective, long-lasting treatment solutions tailored to each patient’s specific needs and circumstances.

Is iDose TR Right for Me?
Think about your current glaucoma treatment plan and ask yourself:
- Am I having any challenges with my treatment, such as difficulty putting in prescription eye drops?
- Do I ever forget to use my prescription eye drops or find my treatment schedule inconvenient?
- Have I experienced any uncomfortable side effects (such as stinging, burning, redness)?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, share your concerns with your eye doctor and discuss if iDose TR could be right for you.
Important Safety Information
iDose TR is gently placed directly inside your eye by your eye doctor.
You should not have iDose TR if you have an infection or suspected infection in your eye or the area surrounding your eye, have corneal endothelial cell dystrophy, a condition in which the clear front layer of your eye (cornea) has lost its ability to work normally as this can cause vision problems, have had a corneal transplant or cells transplanted to the inner layer of the cornea (endothelial cell transplant), are allergic to any of its ingredients, and/or have narrow angles (the iris and the cornea are too close together).
The most common side effect of iDose TR was increased eye pressure. Other common side effects were inflammation of the iris, dry eye, a loss of part of the usual field of vision, eye pain, eye redness and reduced clearness of vision.

DURYSTA™ Glaucoma Treatment
DURYSTA™ is the first, newly FDA-approved biodegradable sustained-release implant that reduces eye pressure, also called intraocular pressure (IOP), in patients with open-angle glaucoma or high eye pressure (ocular hypertension).
Harvard Eye Associates is excited to offer this new, innovative glaucoma treatment option to our patients. In fact, we are the first to treat 100 patients with DURYSTA™ in the U.S.

What is DURYSTA™?
DURYSTA™ is a tiny, dissolvable implant that your ophthalmologist administers into your eye. Once within your eye, the implant steadily releases medicine called bimatoprost every day for several months to help reduce the high eye pressure.
Bimatoprost is believed to lower IOP by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor through both the trabecular meshwork (conventional) and uveoscleral routes (unconventional). Elevated IOP presents a major risk factor for glaucomatous field loss. The higher the level of IOP, the greater the likelihood of optic nerve damage and visual field loss.
DURYSTA™ is designed to be used once and may last several months. Some patients continue to benefit from DURYSTA™ even after it has been broken down.
Am I a Good Candidate for DURYSTA™?
This glaucoma treatment may be a good option for you if:
- you want to minimize eye drops without surgery
- are tired of redness and dryness from eye drops
- struggle to remember to take eye drops every day
- you cannot afford the multiple eye drops
