PRK
At Harvard Eye Associates, we want you to have clear, comfortable vision—and options that fit your eyes and your lifestyle. PRK is one of the safest, most trusted laser vision correction procedures, and it’s a great choice for people who may not be ideal candidates for LASIK.
What is PRK?
PRK reshapes the surface of your cornea using a cool laser to help you see more clearly. Instead of creating a flap in the cornea (like LASIK does), PRK works right on the surface. That makes it a strong option for people with thinner corneas, dry eye, or those who lead active lifestyles.
Who Might Be a Good Candidate?
PRK may be a good fit if you:
- Have nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism
- Have a stable prescription
- Have thinner corneas or dry eye
- Are active in sports or jobs where a flap might not be ideal
- Want long-term visual freedom without glasses or contacts

What to Expect During the Procedure
PRK is quick and comfortable. We start by gently removing the very top layer of the cornea. Then, the laser reshapes the cornea based on your customized treatment plan. A soft bandage contact lens is placed afterward to protect the eye as it heals.
The whole process usually takes just a few minutes per eye.
Recovery & Healing
Because PRK works on the surface of the eye, the initial recovery is a little slower than LASIK.
You can expect:
- Some discomfort the first few days
- Blurry vision that gradually clears
- A bandage contact lens worn for several days
- Regular eye drops to support healing
Most patients notice major improvements within the first week, with steady improvement over the next few weeks.
Why Patients Choose PRK
- No corneal flap
- Excellent long-term results
- Great for people with thinner corneas
- Strong option for athletes or those with active jobs
- A proven and trusted procedure

Medical Disclaimer
This information is intended for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. Not all patients are candidates for refractive surgery. A comprehensive eye examination is required to determine the safest and most effective treatment plan and to evaluate suitability for refractive procedures, such as LASIK, PRK, EVO ICL and RLE. Surgical results can not be guaranteed, and some patients may still need glasses or contact lenses for functional vision.
